Fantasy gaming platform Dream11 has pulled out as the title sponsor of the Indian cricket team following the passage of the Online Gaming Bill in Parliament. The development marks a significant change for Indian cricket sponsorship, as Dream11 had been one of the most visible brands on Team India’s jerseys.
BCCI to Invite New Bids
With Dream11 stepping away, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will now invite new bids for the jersey sponsorship rights. The process is expected to begin soon, particularly with the Asia Cup around the corner. Officials said the move was necessary to ensure that India’s cricket team continues to have a major sponsor on its jerseys during international tournaments.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision, stating that the board has no option but to comply with the laws of the country. “We have to follow the rules as laid down, and Dream11 is not willing to continue its deal under the new framework,” he said.
The withdrawal comes against the backdrop of increased scrutiny of online gaming platforms, with the government tightening regulations around their operations and advertising.
Impact on Indian Cricket
Dream11’s exit creates both a challenge and an opportunity for the BCCI. While the immediate loss of a long-time sponsor could affect short-term planning, it opens the door for other companies—both Indian and global—to associate themselves with one of the world’s most marketable cricket teams. Sponsorship of Team India jerseys has historically drawn major brands due to the unmatched popularity of cricket in the country.
As the BCCI prepares to launch a fresh bidding process, industry experts will be watching closely to see which companies step forward. The outcome will not only decide the next name on India’s cricket jerseys but also reflect how corporate sponsorship is adapting to the new legal environment for online gaming and sports-related advertising in India.
