A US federal judge has blocked the Trump administration’s effort to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities and counties. The ruling, delivered by District Judge William Orrick, ensures that jurisdictions limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities cannot be stripped of funds.
Expanded Protection for More Cities
The new order expands protections beyond the cities covered in Orrick’s earlier decision in April. Major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, Denver, and Albuquerque are now included, along with San Francisco, Sacramento, Minneapolis, and Seattle, which were already shielded under the earlier injunction.
This expansion means dozens of jurisdictions across the country will continue to receive federal funds regardless of their stance on immigration enforcement.
In his ruling, Judge Orrick explained that the administration cannot impose new immigration-related conditions on federal funding without approval from Congress. He noted that federal officials had attempted to use conditions tied to specific grant programs to pressure local governments into cooperating with immigration enforcement.
Orrick also emphasized that the administration had not objected to extending the injunction, though it argued the original order was flawed and is currently under appeal. By expanding the scope of the injunction, the judge reaffirmed that cities cannot be penalized financially for adopting sanctuary policies.
Impact on Sanctuary Cities
Sanctuary cities are municipalities that limit their cooperation with federal immigration authorities, often by restricting local law enforcement from holding individuals solely for immigration violations. These policies are designed to build trust between immigrant communities and local authorities, though they remain highly controversial in national politics.
The ruling provides relief for local governments concerned about losing essential funding for programs unrelated to immigration, such as public safety, education, and healthcare.
While the decision represents a significant setback for the Trump administration’s immigration agenda, the broader legal battle is far from over. The case remains under appeal, and future administrations could attempt to revisit the issue. For now, however, sanctuary cities across the US will continue to receive federal support.
