Thailand has confirmed that its trade negotiations with the United States will continue, following a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The announcement comes at a time when concerns have grown over the possible introduction of new U.S. tariffs that could affect several of Thailand’s key export industries.

According to Thai officials, the conversation between the two leaders focused on trade, economic cooperation, and bilateral relations. Despite a tense global environment, Thailand emphasized that both sides agreed to keep communication open and move ahead with discussions aimed at easing tariff-related uncertainties.

Government spokespeople noted that Thailand intends to handle tariff matters separately from other geopolitical issues, including regional border tensions. By drawing a clear line between trade and other diplomatic challenges, Thailand is hoping to prevent non-economic issues from influencing tariff outcomes.

The United States is one of Thailand’s most important trading partners, purchasing a significant share of Thai exports such as electronics, automotive components, agricultural goods, and processed foods. Any increase in U.S. tariffs could place pressure on Thai manufacturers, affect jobs and supply chains, and weaken export earnings at a time when global demand is already unpredictable.

For this reason, Thailand has made it clear that it wants tariff negotiations to progress steadily. The government said it would work to protect the competitiveness of Thai products in the American market while seeking “mutually beneficial solutions.”

Analysts in Bangkok say that Thailand’s approach of maintaining calm, continuing dialogue, and separating trade from politics is aimed at preventing a sudden economic shock. However, they also warn that the U.S. may still use tariffs as leverage, depending on broader diplomatic developments.

For now, Thailand appears determined to stay engaged and avoid confrontation. Both countries are expected to continue technical-level discussions over the coming weeks, though no formal timeline for an agreement has been announced.
