A paraeducator working for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) has been arrested and charged with several felony counts related to the sexual abuse of a former student. The suspect, 36-year-old Calvin Tran, was taken into custody after a months-long investigation triggered by a report filed earlier this year.

According to authorities, the alleged abuse occurred between 2015 and 2018, when the victim was under 14 years old and attending a middle school within the district. Police say the victim came forward in August 2025, describing years of repeated abuse. After gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses, the San Francisco Police Department’s Fugitive Recovery Enforcement Team arrested Tran without incident.

Prosecutors have filed a range of serious charges, including lewd acts on a child, continuous sexual abuse, oral copulation with a minor, aggravated sexual assault, and meeting a minor for lewd purposes. Given the severity of the allegations, the District Attorney’s Office is requesting that Tran be held without bail, citing risks to public safety and the potential for additional victims.

In response to the arrest, SFUSD officials emphasized their commitment to student safety. Superintendent Maria Su released a statement noting that all district employees undergo criminal background checks, mandated-reporter training, and professional-boundary education. She called the allegations “deeply disturbing” and urged families to speak with children about reporting any inappropriate behavior from adults.

The timeline of the case with alleged incidents stretching back a decade is raising broader concerns about how such abuse could continue unnoticed for years. Child-advocacy groups say the situation highlights the importance of strong school oversight, open communication, and accessible reporting systems for students who may feel unsafe.

Investigators are now working to determine whether additional victims may come forward, as long-term abuse cases sometimes involve multiple students. The district is cooperating fully with police and has provided support resources for families affected by the news.

Tran is expected to appear in court for arraignment in the coming days. The case continues to unfold as authorities examine how the abuse occurred and what steps can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
