The Indian women’s cricket team created history on Saturday, winning their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. The landmark victory marks a new era for women’s cricket in India, ending years of near misses on the world stage.

India’s performance combined youthful aggression with veteran composure as they posted a strong total and successfully defended it against a spirited South African side.

Opening batter Shafali Verma, only 21 years old, played a sensational innings, scoring 87 runs off 102 balls. Her knock, filled with confident drives and sharp running between the wickets, set the tone for India’s total of 298 for 7.

Supported by Harmanpreet Kaur’s 45 and Richa Ghosh’s quick 38, India managed to post a competitive score on a slow surface. Verma’s innings earned her the Player of the Match award and further cemented her position as one of India’s brightest young stars.

Veteran all-rounder Deepti Sharma delivered one of her finest bowling spells in an ICC final, finishing with figures of 5 for 39. Her disciplined line and length helped India restrict South Africa to 246 all out, despite a brilliant counterattack from Laura Wolvaardt, who scored a valiant 101 off 98 balls.

India’s bowlers maintained tight control during the middle overs, with Pooja Vastrakar and Rajeshwari Gayakwad chipping in with key wickets.

The victory sparked celebrations across the country, with fans hailing the triumph as a turning point for women’s sports in India. The BCCI announced a ₹51 crore cash reward for the team, recognizing their groundbreaking achievement.

For a nation that has long awaited a global crown in women’s cricket, this win represents not just success but the beginning of a new legacy.
