The Government of India has denied U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to stop buying Russian oil following a recent phone conversation.

In an official statement, a spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that no such telephonic conversation took place between the two leaders. “There was no conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump yesterday,” the spokesperson said, dismissing the remarks made earlier this week.

The clarification came after Trump publicly claimed that he had spoken with Modi, suggesting that India had agreed to halt purchases of Russian crude oil. “Prime Minister Modi understands the global situation very well and has agreed to stop buying Russian oil,” Trump told reporters during a media interaction.

His comment drew international attention, as India has been one of the major importers of discounted Russian crude since the beginning of Western sanctions in 2022.

India has maintained a consistent position on its energy policy, emphasizing that oil imports are guided by national interests and energy security needs. New Delhi has repeatedly stated that its decisions on crude oil purchases are determined by affordability and market stability rather than political alignment.

Indian officials have also highlighted that Russian imports have helped contain domestic fuel inflation and ensure supply stability amid global energy disruptions.

While India and the United States share strong diplomatic and defense ties, their positions on Russian oil have often diverged. Washington has urged nations to reduce economic engagement with Moscow, but New Delhi has resisted pressure, citing its economic priorities.

The MEA’s statement reinforces India’s independent policy stance and underscores the government’s commitment to transparent diplomacy.

With this clarification, India has effectively dismissed claims of any policy change regarding Russian oil trade.
