The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an urgent warning that infectious diseases in the Gaza Strip are spiraling out of control, with the health system nearing total collapse. According to WHO officials, only 13 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are even partially functional, while most medical facilities remain either destroyed or severely understaffed.

WHO’s latest assessment paints a grim picture of public health in the territory, where overcrowded shelters, contaminated water, and collapsing sanitation systems have created ideal conditions for the spread of disease.

Rapid Spread of Disease in Overcrowded Areas

Officials report a surge in respiratory infections, skin diseases, diarrheal illnesses, and hepatitis, particularly among children. Thousands of displaced families are living in temporary shelters with minimal access to clean water, food, or healthcare.

“The situation is catastrophic,” said a WHO field officer. “Health workers are operating in impossible conditions, with limited medicines and no reliable electricity.”

WHO added that waterborne infections are rising rapidly due to the destruction of water treatment plants and the lack of safe drinking water. With waste systems failing and medical supplies running out, even treatable diseases are becoming deadly.

Infrastructure and Aid Challenges

The ongoing crisis has crippled Gaza’s medical infrastructure. Several hospitals have been struck or forced to close because of fuel shortages and security concerns. The few that remain open are struggling to care for thousands of patients with limited staff, medical equipment, and power.

Aid convoys attempting to deliver medical and food supplies face severe access restrictions, further worsening the crisis. WHO has called for immediate humanitarian access and protection for healthcare workers to prevent further loss of life.

The organization emphasized that without urgent international assistance, Gaza could face a public health disaster on an unprecedented scale. “The spread of infectious diseases is now faster than the healthcare system’s ability to respond,” the WHO said.

The agency has reiterated its appeal for a sustained flow of medical aid and fuel to keep hospitals operational and prevent further deaths.
