Chinese President Xi Jinping has praised Slovakia for what he described as its “adherence” to friendship with China. In a message to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Xi expressed appreciation for Bratislava’s commitment to maintaining stable ties with Beijing.

Xi said he hopes Slovakia will continue to support China’s efforts to strengthen its relations with the European Union. According to him, Beijing values the role of smaller EU states in shaping the bloc’s collective positions. The Chinese president called on Slovakia to play a constructive role in promoting cooperation and dialogue between China and Europe.

Xi highlighted that the relationship between China and Slovakia has been guided by principles of mutual respect and benefit. He pointed to opportunities for practical cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, and cultural exchanges. China, he said, is ready to work with Slovakia to advance projects that contribute to both nations’ growth and stability.

Slovakia, a member of the European Union since 2004, has maintained diplomatic and economic links with China while balancing its commitments within the EU. By praising Slovakia directly, Xi underscored China’s interest in building ties not only with larger European powers but also with smaller member states that contribute to EU decision-making.

Relations between China and the European Union remain complex, shaped by both areas of cooperation and tension. Trade remains a central pillar, but discussions around technology, human rights, and security have influenced the broader relationship. Xi’s message to Slovakia reflects Beijing’s continued effort to secure European support at a time when shifting alliances are shaping global politics.

By extending praise to Slovakia, China signaled its intention to deepen engagement with the EU through multiple channels. The message also highlighted Beijing’s strategy of recognizing and encouraging the contributions of individual member states in advancing broader cooperation.
