Nine members of the Gaza-bound flotilla known as the Sumud Flotilla have returned to Switzerland after being deported from Israel on Sunday. According to the humanitarian organization Waves of Freedom, which represents the activists, several of them have alleged that they were subjected to “inhumane detention conditions” while in Israeli custody.

The flotilla consisted of 19 Swiss nationals, including former Geneva Mayor Remy Pagani, who participated in the mission aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Claims of Harsh Detention Conditions

In a statement, Waves of Freedom said that participants “condemned the inhumane detention conditions and the humiliating and degrading treatment they suffered upon their arrest and incarceration.” The organization further stated that the activists were held for several days before being deported back to Switzerland.

The flotilla had been intercepted by the Israeli Navy before reaching Gaza’s territorial waters. According to Israeli authorities, the vessels violated the naval blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip since 2007.

The allegations from the Swiss activists follow a series of similar claims by other participants in the flotilla. Last week, reports emerged that Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was also reportedly part of the flotilla, faced rough treatment during detention, including being dragged and deprived of food and water.

However, these individual accounts have not been independently verified. Israeli officials have not commented directly on the specific allegations made by the Swiss activists but have maintained that all detainees were treated according to security and legal procedures.

The Sumud Flotilla was part of a broader international initiative to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza amid ongoing conflict and restrictions on the movement of goods and people.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry has confirmed that it is aware of the situation and is in contact with the activists involved. Human rights organizations in Switzerland have called for an independent investigation into the reported detention conditions.
