The United States has warned that Russia will face increasing “costs” if the war in Ukraine continues, reiterating Washington’s support for Kyiv as the conflict nears its third year.

Speaking on Tuesday, Pete Hegseth, the U.S. National Security Advisor, said that Moscow’s continued aggression “will come at a price,” and that Washington remains firm in its stance to hold Russia accountable for actions that undermine international peace and stability.

Hegseth emphasized that the U.S. would continue to coordinate with European allies to maintain pressure on Russia through sanctions, economic restrictions, and diplomatic isolation.

Sanctions and Accountability Measures

Hegseth noted that while the U.S. prefers a peaceful resolution, it is prepared to strengthen existing measures if hostilities persist. “Russia must understand that the path to peace cannot be paved with aggression,” he said.

According to officials familiar with U.S. policy, the measures could include tightened financial sanctions, expanded trade restrictions, and coordinated efforts with NATO partners to restrict access to critical technologies used in the defense sector.

Washington has already imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russian banks, industries, and political figures since the start of the invasion in February 2022.

Focus on Diplomatic Solutions

The U.S. statement comes amid renewed discussions at the United Nations and European Union about de-escalating the conflict. American officials continue to urge diplomatic engagement but have stated that “Russia’s military actions remain incompatible with meaningful negotiations.”

Hegseth also stressed that the U.S. is working to ensure continued humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine. “Our support for the people of Ukraine is not just strategic, it’s moral,” he said.

European allies have largely echoed Washington’s stance, calling for Russia to withdraw forces and respect Ukraine’s sovereignty. NATO leadership has also reaffirmed its commitment to collective defense and ongoing security support for Eastern Europe.

As diplomatic efforts continue, Western nations maintain that their long-term objective remains the same to restore peace through deterrence, accountability, and sustained international unity.
