A diplomatic dispute has flared between the United States and China after US Treasury Secretary Brent Bessent criticized a senior Chinese trade negotiator, calling his behavior “unhinged” and labeling him a “wolf warrior” diplomat.

Speaking at a press briefing in Washington, Bessent said the Chinese official “showed up uninvited” during a recent trade-related visit and displayed “aggressive and erratic conduct not typical of diplomatic engagement.” The Treasury Secretary added that such behavior “does not contribute to constructive dialogue” and reflects “a troubling pattern” in China’s approach to international negotiations.

The “Wolf Warrior” Reference

The term “wolf warrior” refers to an assertive and often confrontational style of diplomacy adopted by some Chinese officials in recent years, particularly in response to Western criticism of Beijing’s policies. The phrase gained popularity from Chinese state-backed films that depicted the patriotic defense of the nation’s image abroad.

Bessent’s remarks echo growing unease among Western officials who have accused Beijing’s diplomats of using public hostility and sharp rhetoric to assert China’s positions on trade, security, and global governance.

Broader Context of US-China Tensions

The exchange comes amid ongoing tensions between the world’s two largest economies over trade imbalances, technology exports, and tariffs. Negotiations have stalled in recent months as both sides struggle to agree on new trade frameworks following repeated accusations of unfair practices.

While Bessent did not name the Chinese negotiator directly, sources familiar with the matter told reporters that the individual had been part of Beijing’s delegation involved in previous high-level discussions with the U.S. Treasury Department.

As of Thursday, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not issued an official response to Bessent’s remarks. However, Beijing has previously defended its diplomats, describing their conduct as “firm and patriotic,” rejecting Western claims that their approach is aggressive.

The latest confrontation underscores the strained relationship between Washington and Beijing, with economic diplomacy increasingly marked by public criticism and diminishing trust between the two powers.
