The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intensified its crackdown on the use of money power in the upcoming Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, seizing a total of ₹33.97 crore in just three days. The action is part of a state-wide effort to curb illegal cash flow, freebies, and inducements that could influence voters.
According to official reports, the seizures include unaccounted cash, liquor, drugs, and other valuables. The commission has directed enforcement and surveillance agencies to maintain round-the-clock monitoring across all 38 districts of Bihar.
Strict Instructions to Enforcement Agencies
The ECI has issued fresh directives to multiple enforcement departments, including the Income Tax Department, State Police, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, and the Narcotics Control Bureau, to ensure coordination and immediate response to any intelligence input related to suspicious transactions.
Special teams have been deployed at airports, state borders, and railway junctions to track the movement of large sums of money or valuables. The commission has also emphasized strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), with a special focus on monitoring expenditure by candidates and political parties.
Along with cash seizures, the Election Commission is also keeping a close watch on digital transactions, online donations, and paid promotional activities on social media. The aim is to ensure that no candidate or party gains an unfair advantage through hidden expenditure or proxy funding.
A senior ECI official stated that “the use of illegal money and inducements erodes public faith in democracy,” adding that transparency in campaign financing will remain a top priority throughout the election process.
With voting expected in multiple phases, the ECI’s enforcement measures reflect its commitment to conducting free and fair elections in Bihar.
The commission has warned that any attempt to influence voters through cash, liquor, or gifts will invite immediate disqualification and legal action under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
