Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi holds a very special place in the hearts of Lord Ganesha devotees. While Sankashti Chaturthi itself is an auspicious day that comes every month, when it falls on a Tuesday it is called Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi. This day is believed to be highly powerful for fulfilling wishes, removing obstacles, and bringing peace into one’s life. In 2025, this divine occasion is being observed with great devotion across India and in Ganesha temples worldwide.
The highlight of this day is listening to or reciting the Vrat Katha, the sacred story that carries deep spiritual meaning. It not only narrates divine events but also inspires devotees to live with faith, patience, and righteousness.
Significance of Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi 2025
The word “Sankashti” means relief from troubles, and “Chaturthi” refers to the fourth day after the full moon in the lunar month. Angaraki Chaturthi is associated with the planet Mars (Mangal), and observing a fast on this day is believed to reduce the ill effects of Mangal dosh in one’s horoscope.
In 2025, Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi falls on a day when spiritual energy is considered to be at its peak. Devotees begin the day with prayers to Lord Ganesha, offering durva grass, red flowers, and modaks. Fasting is observed until the moonrise, and the vrat is concluded with Chandra Darshan after reciting the Vrat Katha.
The Sacred Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha
The story begins in ancient times when Lord Indra, the king of the heavens, once ignored the importance of worshipping Lord Ganesha before starting a ritual. As a result, obstacles arose, and his ceremony was interrupted. Realizing his mistake, Indra prayed to Sage Narada for guidance. Sage Narada explained that Lord Ganesha is the remover of all obstacles and should be worshipped first before any auspicious work.
Sage Narada then narrated the legend of a king named Chandrasena, who was a great devotee of Lord Ganesha. Chandrasena possessed a divine gem gifted by the deity, which brought prosperity and protection to his kingdom. A few neighboring kings grew envious of him and planned to attack. One day, while Chandrasena was worshipping Lord Ganesha, a poor farmer’s daughter wandered into the temple and joined the prayers. She listened to the story of Ganesha and observed the Sankashti Chaturthi fast with sincerity.
Pleased with her devotion, Lord Ganesha blessed her with protection. When enemy kings attacked Chandrasena’s kingdom, divine forces appeared and defeated them. The farmer’s daughter’s sincere prayers not only safeguarded the kingdom but also spread the glory of Sankashti Chaturthi. This story highlights that pure devotion, regardless of one’s status or wealth, can invoke the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
Rituals and Observances of the Vrat
On Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees wake up before sunrise and take a holy bath. A small idol or picture of Lord Ganesha is placed on a clean altar, decorated with flowers and lamps. Offerings such as modaks, laddus, and fruits are prepared.
The vrat involves abstaining from regular meals and consuming only fruits, milk, and vrat-friendly food until moonrise. In the evening, after lighting a lamp and reciting the Vrat Katha, devotees await the appearance of the moon. Once the moon is sighted, water and flowers are offered to it while chanting prayers. The fast is then broken with prasad.
Meaning and Spiritual Message of the Katha
The Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha conveys that devotion and faith hold more value than material wealth or status. The farmer’s daughter in the story did not possess riches, yet her heartfelt prayers were powerful enough to change destiny.
The tale also reminds us that worshipping Lord Ganesha before any important task ensures the removal of obstacles. It teaches humility, gratitude, and the importance of regular spiritual practice. The planetary association with Mars signifies courage, discipline, and the strength to overcome life’s challenges.
Moral Lessons for Devotees
The Vrat Katha offers timeless moral lessons:
- Faith is the greatest strength – Sincere devotion can transform situations in miraculous ways.
- Start with Lord Ganesha’s blessings – Always invoke his name before beginning new ventures.
