Washington, D.C.– A U.S. House Democrats panel has strongly criticized former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on India, arguing that the measures are “hurting Americans” by raising costs and disrupting trade. The comments come amid renewed debate over the impact of Trump-era trade decisions on U.S. consumers and businesses.

Tariffs Under Fire

The panel noted that Trump’s tariffs on Indian goods, imposed during his presidency, were initially justified as part of a broader effort to reset trade relationships. However, Democratic lawmakers argue that the duties ended up raising costs for American importers, small businesses, and consumers, rather than creating new benefits for U.S. industry.

Impact on India–US Trade

India, one of America’s key trading partners, faced tariffs on a range of products including steel, aluminum, and certain manufactured goods. In response, New Delhi also imposed counter-tariffs on U.S. exports, affecting American farmers and manufacturers. Lawmakers said this back-and-forth escalated trade tensions and complicated bilateral ties.

The panel of Democratic lawmakers emphasized that tariffs should not be used as a blunt instrument. Instead, they called for policies that strengthen U.S. competitiveness, reduce costs for families, and support fair trade without creating unnecessary friction with allies. Their statement highlighted that trade with India is critical for both economies and should be approached with cooperation, not conflict.

The criticism of Trump’s India tariffs also reflects broader concerns about the former administration’s approach to trade. Democrats argue that across multiple countries, tariffs disrupted supply chains and often had unintended effects on U.S. consumers. They urged policymakers to focus on building strong partnerships with allies like India to address global challenges such as China’s growing influence.

The Democratic panel’s criticism underscores the continuing political debate in Washington over trade policy. While Trump defended tariffs as tools to protect American jobs, Democrats maintain that the measures backfired by raising prices and straining ties with India. The discussion signals that trade with India will remain a key issue in U.S. economic and foreign policy going forward.
