A UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Monday evening, leaving at least seven people dead and several others injured. The tragic incident has prompted a full federal investigation and caused shock throughout the Louisville community, where the airport serves as a major shipping hub for the company.
The aircraft had been scheduled to fly to Honolulu when witnesses reported seeing its left wing on fire moments after takeoff. The plane lost altitude quickly and crashed near the airport around 5:15 p.m., leading to a large explosion that sent flames and smoke into the surrounding area.
Officials confirmed that four of the people who died were on the ground, not aboard the aircraft. Several nearby buildings and vehicles sustained heavy damage from the blast and debris, highlighting the force and proximity of the crash to airport-adjacent neighborhoods and industrial zones.
Emergency crews responded within minutes, working to extinguish fires and rescue survivors. Eleven individuals were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from burns to trauma caused by falling wreckage. Local authorities warned that the number of casualties may change as recovery efforts continue.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have begun a joint investigation. Officials say they will examine flight data, maintenance history, pilot communication records, and possible mechanical issues, including the reported wing fire, to determine what caused the aircraft to fail shortly after departure.
The Louisville airport is one of the largest UPS shipping centers in the world, processing hundreds of cargo flights each day. While UPS has said it is cooperating fully with authorities, the company has not released details about the crew members involved.
Kentucky state officials described the scene as “devastating” and offered condolences to families affected by the crash. Residents, many shaken by the explosion, are calling for continued updates as investigators work to understand what led to the fatal incident.
