Chevron has announced a new agreement with Israel Natural Gas Lines, the state-owned pipeline operator, to construct the Nitzana pipeline. The project will transport natural gas from Israel’s Leviathan offshore field to Egypt, boosting the region’s energy trade.

The Leviathan gas field, one of the largest in the eastern Mediterranean, contains an estimated 600 billion cubic meters of reserves. Just last month, Leviathan’s owners, NewMed, Chevron, and Ratio Energies finalized a $35 billion deal to export gas to Egypt. The Nitzana pipeline is the latest development aimed at meeting those commitments.

Chevron said that once operational, the Nitzana pipeline will deliver about 600 million cubic feet of gas per day. The additional capacity will increase Israel’s total exports to Egypt to over 2.2 billion cubic feet per day. The project is expected to be completed within three years, strengthening Egypt’s role as a key hub for re-exporting natural gas to Europe and other markets.

In parallel, UK-based gas producer Energean announced plans to use the same Nitzana route to transport up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas annually from its Katlan offshore field. Energean’s project is expected to come online in 2027, further expanding the region’s energy network.

The Nitzana pipeline highlights the growing energy cooperation between Israel and Egypt, which has intensified in recent years as both nations seek to expand their roles in the global gas market. Egypt already operates liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals that allow re-exports to Europe, a region eager to diversify supplies amid shifts in global energy flows.

With construction set to begin soon, the Nitzana pipeline marks another major step in developing the eastern Mediterranean’s natural gas infrastructure. If completed on schedule, it will strengthen Israel’s export capacity, reinforce Egypt’s energy position, and deepen regional economic ties through shared energy projects.
