United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned an Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital in Gaza, calling it “unconscionable.” He warned that expanded military operations in Gaza City could bring devastating consequences for civilians.
Speaking on the situation, Guterres described the attack on Nasser Hospital as unacceptable under international humanitarian law. He stressed that medical facilities must always be protected, adding that targeting hospitals puts innocent lives at extreme risk and undermines the basic principles of human rights.
The Secretary-General emphasized that Gaza’s already strained health system cannot withstand further destruction. With hospitals overwhelmed by casualties and shortages of medical supplies, he noted that continued military strikes would severely worsen the humanitarian crisis. “Expanded military operations in Gaza City will only multiply the suffering of civilians,” Guterres said.
Global aid agencies and human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns over the targeting of civilian infrastructure during the conflict. The United Nations has consistently called for restraint and adherence to international law, reminding all parties of their responsibility to protect civilians.
The strike on Nasser Hospital comes at a time when Gaza City has faced heavy bombardment. Thousands of residents have been displaced, while international observers warn of worsening conditions for those trapped inside the city. Access to essential services such as water, electricity, and healthcare remains severely limited.
Guterres reiterated the UN’s stance that accountability is essential in cases where international law is violated. He called for immediate steps to prevent further attacks on medical facilities and urged the international community to press for stronger protections for civilians.
The condemnation by the UN chief highlights the growing international alarm over the conflict’s impact on Gaza’s civilian population. With warnings of “devastating consequences,” the statement underscores the urgency of halting attacks on hospitals and safeguarding humanitarian space.
