Two women were killed early Wednesday morning in a hit-and-run crash on Cullen Boulevard in Southeast Houston after a street altercation spilled into the road. The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. near Maggie Street, according to the Houston Police Department (HPD).
Investigators said the two women were reportedly fighting in the roadway when a southbound vehicle, believed to be a sedan, struck them and fled the scene. Both women were pronounced dead at the location.
HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division has launched a full investigation into the case and is currently reviewing nearby surveillance footage to identify the vehicle and driver involved. Detectives believe the car was traveling in the main lane when the driver hit the woman, who were in the middle of the road during their altercation.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims but said both appeared to be in their 40s. Officers are awaiting official identification from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences before notifying their families.
“We’re asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has video from the area to come forward,” said an HPD spokesperson. “Leaving the scene of a fatal crash is a serious crime, and we are determined to find the driver responsible.”
Residents of the Sunnyside neighborhood expressed shock at the tragedy. Locals said Cullen Boulevard, a major thoroughfare lined with stores and bus stops, often sees late-night pedestrian activity but has limited lighting in some sections.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said a nearby shop owner. “That stretch of road is dangerous, especially at night. Drivers go fast, and people sometimes cross where it’s not well-lit.”
