A federal judge has extended an order blocking the Trump administration’s plan to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago as part of a broader immigration enforcement strategy. The ruling comes amid growing legal debate over how much authority the federal government has to use state-based military forces for domestic operations.

The decision means that, for now, National Guard personnel cannot be stationed in Chicago under the immigration-focused deployment plan modeled after “Operation Lone Star”, an initiative that originally targeted illegal border crossings in Texas.

The case has become a major test of constitutional boundaries between federal and state powers. While federal officials argue the deployment is necessary to support national immigration enforcement, city and state leaders say it represents an overreach that threatens local control and civil rights protections.

Chicago officials and several states, including California and Oregon, have argued that federal involvement in local policing and immigration enforcement erodes trust between communities and law enforcement. They also say it could set a precedent for military-style operations in cities far from the southern border.

The U.S. Supreme Court is now set to review the larger constitutional question of whether states can legally block or limit federal use of the National Guard for internal deployments not related to emergencies or war. Legal experts note that the outcome could redefine how National Guard units are used in future domestic security and immigration efforts.

For now, the injunction means Trump’s proposed expansion of the program into Chicago, Portland, and parts of California remains frozen.

Analysts say the case reflects a growing national debate over the balance of power between Washington and individual states, especially as border security becomes an increasingly political issue. The court’s eventual decision could shape how future administrations respond to immigration and internal security challenges across the country.
