Washington – U.S. President Donald Trump has once again said that he personally stopped India and Pakistan from going to nuclear war, repeating a statement he has made more than two dozen times in recent years.
Trump’s Version of Events
Speaking at a recent event, Trump claimed that during a tense standoff between the two countries, “six or seven planes came down” and both sides were “ready to go nuclear.” According to him, it was his direct intervention that prevented the crisis from escalating into a full-scale war.
This is the 25th time Trump has publicly shared this version of events, often using it to present himself as a decisive leader in international affairs.
Political Reactions
The repeated claims have drawn sharp responses in India. The Congress party mocked the statement, calling it a “silver jubilee” of exaggerations. Indian officials have consistently said that it was India’s own military actions and diplomacy, not U.S. pressure, that led to de-escalation.
What Really Happened
The actual ceasefire between India and Pakistan was achieved in May 2025 after weeks of military and diplomatic tension. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were involved in facilitating backchannel communication, but Indian sources say the groundwork was laid through India’s own strategy and talks.
While Washington did play a role in urging restraint, the idea that Trump alone prevented a nuclear exchange remains unverified and is largely viewed in India as an overstatement.
