US President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday, October 4, that American forces had intercepted and struck a vessel allegedly carrying illegal drugs off the coast of Venezuela. The operation is part of ongoing US efforts to curb narcotics trafficking in the Caribbean and along South America’s northern coastline.

Trump stated that the action reflects Washington’s continued focus on countering drug smuggling operations in the region. “Our forces hit another boat off Venezuela carrying illegal drugs,” he said, adding that the administration will now expand its focus to include land-based drug trafficking activities as well.

The United States has maintained a steady presence in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific for years as part of its counter-narcotics campaign. According to defense officials, the mission aims to disrupt drug routes that link South American producers with North American and European markets.

Operations in these waters have led to multiple vessel interceptions in recent months. Washington has often cited Venezuela’s coastal waters as a major transit point for narcotics shipments, particularly cocaine and synthetic drugs, heading northward.

While the Venezuelan government has not yet issued a formal response, past US operations near its territorial waters have drawn strong criticism from Caracas, which accuses Washington of violating sovereignty. The latest action may further strain relations between the two nations, already marked by diplomatic and political tensions.

Trump also announced plans to intensify scrutiny of land-based drug networks operating across Latin America, saying, “We are looking not only at sea routes but also what’s happening on land.”

The president highlighted the need for cooperation with regional governments to target both supply chains and financial networks that enable trafficking.

The operation underscores the US government’s commitment to its long-running counter-narcotics agenda in Latin America. The latest strike comes amid heightened efforts to reduce the flow of illegal substances entering the United States and to strengthen maritime security in international waters.
