The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has reported a sharp increase in retaliatory violence and summary killings across Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8, 2024. The watchdog said the violence has largely targeted civilians linked to various sectarian and political groups, as well as individuals accused of ties to the former government.
1,237 Deaths Recorded in 10 Months
Between December 8, 2024, and October 8, 2025, the SOHR documented the deaths of 1,237 people in what it described as acts of revenge and summary executions. Of these, 1,182 were men, 34 were women, and 21 were children. The killings occurred in several provinces, with victims reportedly targeted due to sectarian identity or suspected association with the previous administration.
The group noted that many of the incidents occurred in areas experiencing a power vacuum, where local militias and armed factions have been settling scores outside any established legal framework.
The report added that from the regime’s collapse in December 2024 until the end of that year, 160 additional victims were killed in revenge attacks and summary executions, a toll that included 159 men and one woman. The SOHR described the pattern as part of a wider breakdown in law and order following the fall of centralized authority.
Sectarian and Political Tensions
Human rights monitors say the latest wave of killings reflects long-standing sectarian and political divisions in post-conflict Syria. Many of the victims were allegedly targeted for their perceived loyalties during the country’s earlier civil conflict, which lasted more than a decade.
The SOHR urged transitional authorities and international partners to take urgent steps to prevent further revenge violence and to establish mechanisms for accountability. The organization warned that without legal oversight, the cycle of retaliation could undermine any progress toward stability and reconciliation.
