The Delhi High Court has accepted a petition filed by former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede against Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment, the production company owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan. The court has issued a notice to all respondents, directing them to submit their responses within seven days.
The petition reportedly challenges the portrayal of events and characters in a Netflix project produced by Red Chillies Entertainment. Wankhede, who led the NCB investigation in the high-profile Aryan Khan drug case in 2021, has alleged that the upcoming or existing content misrepresents facts and affects his professional image.
The court’s decision to accept the petition means that the matter will now be formally heard, and the parties involved, Netflix, Red Chillies Entertainment, and associated producers, must file their written replies within the court’s stipulated timeframe.
Wankhede has sought a halt on the streaming or release of any content that allegedly portrays him in a defamatory or misleading manner. His counsel argued that the portrayal could influence public perception and cause irreparable damage to his personal and professional reputation.
The plea emphasises the need for factual accuracy in dramatised or documentary-based media projects, especially when they reference ongoing or recent legal cases.
The High Court bench has listed the matter for further hearing after the responses are submitted. The court will then decide whether any interim relief, such as a stay order on streaming the content, is warranted.
The development has drawn attention across the entertainment and legal sectors, given the involvement of a major global streaming platform and one of Bollywood’s leading production houses. The court’s next hearing is expected to determine the immediate course of action regarding the disputed content.
