International singer and music producer Akon was arrested near Atlanta after police discovered he had an outstanding warrant related to a missed court appearance, authorities confirmed this week. The 52-year-old artist, known for hits like “Locked Up” and “Smack That,” was taken into custody after officers identified his vehicle through a traffic-camera alert in Chamblee, Georgia.
According to police, the warrant dated back to a January 2023 court case in which Akon failed to appear after being cited for driving with a suspended license. The suspension reportedly became active after an earlier incident in September 2022 involving his Tesla Cybertruck, which was found stalled on a roadway in Roswell. At that time, officers determined his license was not valid, and he also did not have proper insurance for the vehicle.
When officers stopped the vehicle in the most recent incident, they confirmed Akon’s identity, took him into custody, and transported him to the DeKalb County Jail. He was later transferred to Roswell Police custody before posting bail and being released the same day. No additional charges were filed at the time of his release.
Akon’s representatives have suggested the suspended license may have resulted from a clerical oversight, though police documents show the warrant remained active for nearly two years until the arrest last week. Authorities have not commented on whether further investigation into the paperwork claim will take place.
The timing of the arrest drew widespread attention, as Akon is currently on an international tour, including recent performances in India. Despite the legal interruption, his scheduled events have continued as planned, and the singer has not yet released a public statement addressing the arrest.
Legal experts note that missed court dates, even for minor traffic cases, can lead to long-standing warrants, which may surface unexpectedly during routine police checks. Akon is expected to resolve the matter in the upcoming court hearings.
The arrest marks a rare legal setback for the Grammy-nominated artist, who is equally known for his music career and large-scale philanthropic projects across Africa.
