Russia has moved to further control its digital space by restricting voice calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, two of the most widely used messaging apps in the country. The decision, announced by communications watch dog Roskomnadzor, is part of what authorities describe as a security measures but critics see it as another step in a long campaign to limit online freedoms.

Why the Ban Was Imposed

According to Roskomnadzor, these apps are being exploited for scams, extortion, terrorist recruitment, and other criminal activities. Officials say repeated requests to the companies to cooperate with investigations and curb illegal use have gone unanswered. The regulator has warned that services could face further action unless they comply with Russian data sharing requirements.

The Platforms Respond

WhatsApp has accused the Russian government of undermining secure communication, insisting its end-to-end encryption is vital for protecting the privacy of over 100 million Russian users. Telegram, meanwhile, has highlighted its AI-powered monitoring systems that identify harmful content, while reaffirming its willingness to work with law enforcement within legal limits.

Part of a Bigger Strategy

This is not an isolated move. Since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, Russia has steadily tightened internet controls blocking platforms like Facebook and Instagram, limiting VPN use, and pushing citizens towards government-approved apps. Experts say the WhatsApp and Telegram restrictions are aimed at reducing reliance on foreign services and increasing the dominance of homegrown platforms.

What It Means for Users

The partial ban currently targets voice and in some cases video calls, but text messaging remains functional. For millions of Russians, however, these limitations disrupt how they communicate with friends, family, and business contacts. Whether services will be fully restored depends on whether the companies meet Russian legal demands something both platforms appear reluctant to do.
