Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any move by the United States to supply Tomahawk long-range missiles to Ukraine would “destroy” Moscow’s relationship with Washington. Speaking during a televised address, Putin said such an escalation would mark a direct threat to Russia’s national security and lead to severe diplomatic consequences.
Putin emphasized that if Kyiv were to receive long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of striking deep inside Russian territory, it would be seen as a major provocation. “If the United States decides to provide Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles, it would lead to the destruction of our relationship with Washington,” Putin said.
The Russian President added that Moscow has already conveyed its position to U.S. officials through diplomatic channels. He stated that Russia considers any external supply of offensive weapons to Ukraine as a step that further destabilizes regional security.
US-Ukraine Defense Cooperation Context
The United States has been one of Ukraine’s key defense supporters since the conflict began in 2022, supplying air defense systems, ammunition, and armored vehicles. The Tomahawk missile, which has a range of over 1,000 kilometers, would significantly expand Ukraine’s ability to target areas deep within Russian territory.
However, Washington has not confirmed any formal decision regarding the supply of such long-range missiles to Kyiv. U.S. defense officials have stated that all assistance packages are being reviewed carefully to prevent confrontation with Russia.
Putin reiterated that Russia remains open to dialogue but would respond decisively to any action that endangers its security interests. He noted that Moscow views the potential delivery of Tomahawks as crossing a red line in bilateral relations.
Tensions between the U.S. and Russia have already strained over ongoing Western military aid to Ukraine. Putin’s warning adds further weight to growing concerns about the risk of escalation between the two nuclear powers.
