Four French lawmakers belonging to France’s left-wing political bloc have declared a hunger strike after being detained by Israeli authorities. The deputies were part of a Gaza-bound flotilla aiming to deliver humanitarian assistance when they were intercepted by the Israeli Navy earlier this week.
According to their party, the lawmakers began their hunger strike while in custody, protesting both their detention and Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip. Their participation in the flotilla was part of what they described as a “peaceful mission” aimed at raising awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Details of Detention
The flotilla, known as the Global Freedom Flotilla, was stopped by the Israeli Navy before reaching Gaza’s territorial waters. The vessels were redirected to the Israeli port of Ashdod, where passengers, including activists, journalists, and lawmakers, were detained for questioning.
The French deputies were reportedly taken into administrative custody along with several international activists. Israeli authorities have accused the flotilla participants of violating the naval blockade, which has been in place since 2007.
Party Statement from France
In a statement released on Sunday, the lawmakers’ political party condemned the detentions and called for their immediate release. The party said the hunger strike was meant to highlight “the unacceptable conditions faced by the people of Gaza and the continued restriction of humanitarian access.”
French media reported that the Foreign Ministry in Paris is monitoring the situation closely and has sought clarification from Israeli officials regarding the status of the detained deputies.
The incident has drawn international attention, adding to ongoing debates about the legality and humanitarian impact of Israel’s blockade. Human rights organizations have previously criticized the restrictions as collective punishment, while Israel maintains the blockade is necessary for security reasons to prevent weapons smuggling into Gaza.
Current Status
As of Sunday evening, the detained French lawmakers remain in Israeli custody. Authorities have not confirmed when they will be released or whether formal charges will be filed against them.
