Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) long-awaited indigenous 4G network on Saturday. The rollout, covering 98,000 sites across India, is seen as a major milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure with homegrown technology.
The 4G project has been developed using entirely indigenous technology, in line with the government’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India). Unlike earlier rollouts that relied heavily on foreign equipment, BSNL’s new 4G network has been built with Indian hardware and software solutions, developed through partnerships between local telecom firms and research institutions.
With installations at 98,000 sites, the network promises to bring wider and more reliable connectivity to both urban and rural areas. Officials said the project is particularly focused on improving digital access in underserved regions, reducing the urban-rural divide in telecommunications.
For BSNL, the launch marks a crucial step in reviving its position in India’s highly competitive telecom market. Once a leading state-owned telecom provider, BSNL has faced stiff competition from private operators in recent years. The new 4G network is expected to help the company regain ground by offering better services and affordable plans.
The rollout is not just about connectivity. By using indigenous technology, the project reduces dependence on foreign vendors and strengthens India’s digital sovereignty. Analysts also note that the large-scale deployment of 4G infrastructure will create jobs, boost local manufacturing, and lay the groundwork for future 5G expansion.
The move aligns with the government’s broader Digital India mission, which aims to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Prime Minister Modi is expected to highlight the significance of the rollout in his address, underlining how indigenous technology can serve as the backbone of India’s digital growth.
The nationwide launch is expected to significantly enhance BSNL’s services, providing millions of Indians with improved internet access.
