New Delhi: In a first during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi openly saluted the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), calling it the “world’s largest NGO” and praising its century-long journey of service to the nation.
First Public Acknowledgment in Over a Decade
Since taking office in 2014, Modi had never directly mentioned the RSS in his Independence Day speeches. This year marked a shift, as he chose the 79th Independence Day to give the organisation a rare public tribute.
A Century of Voluntary Service
The RSS, founded in 1925, recently completed 100 years of community work. PM Modi lauded its volunteer-driven approach, describing it as an example of discipline, dedication and nation-building. He credited its members with playing a silent but vital role in strengthening social harmony and character development.
Message to the Cadre
The Prime Minister’s remarks were seen as both recognition and encouragement for RSS volunteers. He highlighted their contribution to rural development, disaster relief, education, and civic initiatives, noting that their collective spirit mirrors India’s aspirations for self-reliance and unity.
Significance of the Statement
Political observers believe this acknowledgment reinforces the ideological and organisational influence of the RSS in shaping India’s socio-political framework. It also comes at a symbolic moment, with the country reflecting on its national journey during the Independence Day celebrations.
