Dubai: The Indian Consulate in Dubai has announced a revised passport application process for Indian expatriates living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The change is in line with a directive issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and follows guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Updated Rule for Applications

Under the new regulation, Indian citizens in the UAE will need to follow updated documentation and procedural requirements when applying for a new passport or renewing an existing one. The rule is aimed at ensuring that all applications meet global aviation security and identification standards.

Alignment With ICAO Standards

The ICAO guidelines require countries to adopt uniform standards for travel documents. These include biometric features, machine-readable zones, and other digital identifiers that strengthen international travel security. By implementing this rule through its missions abroad, India is aligning its passport system with international best practices.

What It Means for Indian Expats

For the large Indian community in the UAE, the new directive is expected to streamline the passport process while also enhancing compliance with global systems. The consulate has assured applicants that the rule will make procedures more efficient without causing delays. It has also advised Indian nationals to carefully review the updated requirements before submitting applications.

The Indian Consulate in Dubai and the Embassy in Abu Dhabi play a central role in processing thousands of passport requests each year. With the new rule, both missions are expected to work closely with local authorities and Indian applicants to ensure a smooth transition.

The passport application update reflects India’s effort to modernize its travel documents while keeping pace with global standards. For Indian expatriates in the UAE, the change is a step toward more secure, standardized, and globally recognized documentation.
