Nepal has been facing political turmoil after mass protests forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to step down. The unrest, which left at least 51 people dead, created a leadership vacuum and deepened divisions in the country. In this climate, Nepal’s younger generation has turned to an unusual tool to express its political will, the online platform Discord.
Thousands of young Nepalis participated in a digital vote on Discord to select their choice for interim Prime Minister. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki emerged as the top candidate, receiving more than 50 percent of the 7,713 votes cast. For many of Nepal’s youth, this online process symbolized an alternative form of democracy and a break from traditional political practices.
Sushila Karki is widely recognized for her reputation as an anti-corruption crusader. She made history as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and earned respect for her strong stance on judicial independence. Supporters argue that her background makes her a credible choice for leading the country during this uncertain period. However, critics have pointed to her connections with older political networks, warning that such ties could raise questions about her independence.
Independent politician and popular rapper Balen Shah gave his endorsement to Karki, further boosting her standing among young activists. Shah has built a reputation as a voice of change in Nepali politics, and his support was seen by many as a symbolic seal of approval.
Despite the digital vote and endorsements, Nepal continues to face pressing challenges. Over 12,000 prisoners are reported to still be at large following the unrest, while several cities remain heavily damaged. Youth leaders insist that their movement was peaceful and that they were not responsible for the violence that erupted during the protests.
The Discord vote may not hold legal authority, but it reflects the frustration and determination of Nepal’s younger generation to demand new forms of leadership. At a time of deep uncertainty, the youth-driven digital process highlights their desire to be heard in shaping the country’s political future.
