National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice-President of India, defeating the Opposition INDIA bloc’s candidate B Sudershan Reddy. The election marks another significant win for the ruling alliance, further strengthening its hold over key constitutional positions.
The official announcement came after voting concluded on Tuesday, with Radhakrishnan securing a clear majority of votes from Members of Parliament.
Radhakrishnan is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Tamil Nadu. He has been associated with the party for several decades and is known for his work at both the grassroots and national levels.
In his political career, Radhakrishnan has held multiple organizational roles and contested parliamentary elections, representing the BJP in Tamil Nadu. His election as Vice-President brings a leader from southern India into one of the highest offices of the country.
The Vice-President of India also serves as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament. In this role, Radhakrishnan will be responsible for conducting proceedings in the House, ensuring debates are orderly, and maintaining the dignity of the institution.
As the second-highest constitutional authority after the President, the Vice-President’s position is crucial in balancing legislative functions and upholding parliamentary traditions.
The Opposition INDIA bloc had fielded B Sudershan Reddy, a respected leader with a background in law and governance. Despite putting up a strong fight, the INDIA bloc was unable to secure enough support to defeat the NDA candidate.
The result once again demonstrates the numerical strength of the NDA in Parliament, following its victories in earlier elections for the posts of President and key parliamentary offices.
With this win, CP Radhakrishnan now steps into one of the most important roles in Indian democracy. His election is being seen as a moment of pride for Tamil Nadu, highlighting the growing importance of southern leaders in national politics.
