Peshawar, Pakistan: Militants launched an assault on a security forces camp in northwestern Pakistan, triggering an hours-long gunbattle that left at least three officers dead and 17 others wounded, police said on Monday. One assailant was also killed during the clash.

Gunbattle in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The attack occurred in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a region that has witnessed frequent militant violence over the past years. Security officials reported that heavily armed assailants opened fire on the camp, sparking intense exchanges that lasted several hours.

Witnesses said loud gunfire and explosions were heard from the area, causing panic among nearby residents. Police forces quickly cordoned off the site and launched a clearance operation to secure the compound.

Authorities confirmed the deaths of three officers and said at least 17 security personnel sustained injuries in the attack. One of the militants involved was killed, while others may have escaped in the chaos.

The wounded officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment, with some reported to be in critical condition. Images from the scene showed damaged vehicles and debris scattered across the compound, reflecting the scale of the assault.

Rising Militancy in the Region

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan, has long been a hotspot for militant activity. Armed groups have carried out repeated attacks on security forces, government facilities, and civilians. Officials say the latest assault highlights ongoing challenges in curbing extremist violence despite counter-terrorism operations.

Local authorities condemned the attack, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice. Additional troops were deployed to the area, and search operations were launched to track down the attackers.

Security analysts noted that militant violence in Pakistan has seen an uptick in recent months, raising concerns about stability in the region. The government has pledged stronger action to protect security personnel and prevent future assaults.

For now, the incident underscores the persistent threat facing Pakistan’s security forces as they continue to confront armed groups in volatile border areas.
