A Miami-Dade mother has been arrested after authorities say she stabbed her teenage son with a fork during an argument that escalated inside their home early Friday morning. The incident unfolded around 8:15 a.m. near Northwest 72nd Street and left the 19-year-old with a puncture wound behind his ear.

According to the arrest report, the dispute began over two common sources of tension the teenager’s high phone bill and his repeated late arrivals to school. Deputies say 39-year-old Leticia Puentes confronted her son about the issues, and the conversation quickly turned into a heated exchange.

Investigators say the situation escalated when the teen allegedly became angry and began throwing items around the room. Puentes told deputies she feared the situation would get out of control and claimed she acted in self-defense, grabbing a metal fork and stabbing him once behind the ear to protect herself.

When officers and rescue crews arrived, they found the teen alert, with a visible puncture wound. He was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization. Despite the relatively minor injury, the nature of the attack led deputies to arrest Puentes on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Under Florida law, even everyday objects such as forks can be classified as weapons if used to inflict harm.

Puentes was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where a judge later set her bond at $3,000. She has not entered a plea, and the case is expected to move forward as prosecutors review her claims of self-defense.

Domestic incidents involving household objects are not uncommon, deputies noted, but the case highlights how quickly family arguments can turn violent. The investigation will now focus on whether Puentes actions were justified under Florida’s self-defense statutes or whether prosecutors will pursue the charge as filed.

Officials say more details will become available as the case proceeds through the court system.
