Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused foreign powers of waging a “war” against his country, claiming the campaign aims at regime change and the theft of Venezuela’s oil resources. Speaking in a televised address from Caracas, Maduro said that Venezuela would not “bow to external pressure” and vowed to defend the nation’s sovereignty.
“The war on Venezuela is not about democracy or human rights. It’s about stealing our oil and destroying our independence,” Maduro declared. He described ongoing international sanctions and political isolation as “tools of economic warfare.”
Maduro’s remarks come amid continued U.S. and European sanctions targeting Venezuela’s energy sector, banking system, and senior government officials. The sanctions were imposed in response to alleged human rights violations and concerns over Venezuela’s 2018 presidential election, which Western governments said lacked transparency.
Washington has long called for new elections and a political transition, while Caracas maintains that foreign governments are attempting to undermine Venezuela’s elected leadership through economic coercion.
The sanctions have worsened Venezuela’s already fragile economy, leading to a decline in oil exports, the country’s main source of revenue. Despite this, Maduro said the government has continued efforts to revive oil production through partnerships with allied nations such as China, Russia, and Iran.
He also credited Venezuelan workers for “keeping the country moving despite the blockade” and accused Western powers of attempting to “control the nation’s natural wealth through destabilization.”
Maduro reiterated that his government will continue to resist international intervention and safeguard national resources. “No empire will dictate Venezuela’s future,” he said, calling on citizens to remain united.
The Venezuelan leader’s comments underscore rising geopolitical tension as the country navigates both economic sanctions and efforts to regain full control of its vital oil industry.
