French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday, October 12, approved Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s new cabinet lineup, reappointing Roland Lescure as Finance Minister. The announcement comes amid France’s ongoing political challenges and growing pressure to deliver the 2026 budget to a divided parliament.

Lecornu, whose previous government lasted just 14 hours before facing internal challenges, has reshuffled several major portfolios while keeping key ministers in their posts.
Jean-Noël Barrot remains Foreign Minister, and Gérald Darmanin continues as Justice Minister. In one of the most notable changes, Laurent Nunez, previously Paris Police Chief, has been appointed as Interior Minister, replacing Bruno Retailleau.

A major addition to the new cabinet is Catherine Vautrin, a veteran of the center-right political camp, who has been named Defense Minister. Her appointment is viewed as a strategic move aimed at strengthening bipartisan cooperation in an increasingly polarized parliament.

Vautrin’s extensive political experience, particularly in domestic and regional governance, is expected to bring stability to France’s defense policy as the country continues its commitments within NATO and the European Union.

Lecornu’s reappointment comes at a time when France is facing one of its deepest political crises in recent years. Far-left parties have announced plans for a no-confidence vote, while Macron’s centrist coalition continues to struggle with minority status in parliament.

The government is also under pressure to pass deficit-reduction measures and finalize its medium-term economic strategy. Public frustration over cost-of-living issues and labor reforms has further complicated the administration’s ability to maintain stability.

In his address, Lecornu pledged that the new cabinet would embody “renewal and diversity” while emphasizing fiscal responsibility and social unity. Analysts say his success will depend on his ability to bridge France’s growing political divides and push through critical economic reforms before the 2026 budget deadline.
