Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi visited Syria on Tuesday as part of new diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in the southern province of Sweida. Safadi met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaabi and US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack for a trilateral meeting aimed at restoring calm in the conflict-affected region.

Jordan Reaffirms Support for Syria’s Unity

Speaking at a press conference, Safadi highlighted Jordan’s commitment to security cooperation with Syria. He described southern Syria as an “extension of Jordan’s security” and underlined that “Syria’s security and stability are part of Jordan’s security.” Safadi also reiterated Jordan’s long-standing position of supporting the unity and sovereignty of Syrian territory.

Condemnation of Israeli Actions

Safadi used the platform to criticize Israeli actions in Syria, which he labeled as “seditious meddling.” He stressed that Israel’s interference continues to be one of the primary factors dividing Syria and worsening the regional crisis. His remarks reinforced Jordan’s consistent rejection of unilateral actions that threaten Syria’s stability.

Addressing Sweida Violence

Syria’s foreign minister, Asaad al-Shaabi, recalled the violence that struck Sweida in July, a predominantly Druze province. He described the tragedy as one that “left its mark on the heart of every Syrian home,” emphasizing national unity and resilience in the face of unrest.

During the meeting, Safadi announced a plan supported by both Jordan and the United States to restore peace in Sweida. The roadmap focuses on accountability for those responsible for attacks on civilians, compensating families affected by the violence, and beginning a process of internal reconciliation. The initiative signals a new effort to stabilize Sweida and prevent further escalation.

The trilateral talks highlight a rare moment of cooperation between Jordan, Syria, and the United States on conflict resolution. Whether this roadmap leads to long-term peace in Sweida will depend on continued dialogue, accountability, and regional support.
