Hundreds of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening to pray for the safe release of hostages being held in Gaza. The event came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced his proposed plan to end the ongoing conflict and secure the freedom of Israeli captives.
Families of hostages, religious leaders, and citizens joined together in an open-air square, lighting candles and holding signs calling for peace and unity. Many participants said they were hoping the new diplomatic push could bring long-awaited relief to families still waiting for news about their loved ones.
President Trump’s plan, unveiled earlier this week, includes provisions for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and increased humanitarian access to Gaza. The proposal has been presented as a phased approach designed to de-escalate tensions and initiate peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
Israeli officials have expressed cautious optimism about the proposal, while emphasizing that the release of hostages remains their top priority. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that Israel is ready to begin “immediate implementation” of Trump’s plan if conditions allow.
While the prayers in Tel Aviv highlighted a message of hope, protests also took place in Jerusalem. Demonstrators called on the government to accelerate negotiations for the release of hostages and to increase pressure on Hamas. The events in both cities reflected a growing mix of public emotion, grief, frustration, and cautious faith in the possibility of peace.
One attendee at the Tel Aviv gathering said, “We are praying for every single person still held in Gaza. All we want is to bring them home safely.”
Despite the diplomatic developments, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza continued over the weekend, with reports of damage to infrastructure in several areas. Both Israeli and U.S. officials reiterated that the success of any peace initiative will depend on maintaining restraint and prioritizing humanitarian needs alongside security considerations.
