External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reaffirmed India’s position on its trade relationship with the United States, stressing that any agreement must respect India’s national interests and “non-negotiable” priorities. Speaking at a policy forum on India-US relations, Jaishankar emphasized that while New Delhi seeks strong economic cooperation with Washington, it will not compromise on key areas that define its strategic and economic sovereignty.
“There has to be a trade understanding with the US,” Jaishankar said. “But it must be one where our red lines are respected. Certain things are non-negotiable for India.”
Balancing Partnership and Principles
Jaishankar’s comments reflect India’s consistent approach of balancing engagement with major powers while maintaining autonomy in decision-making. The minister noted that both nations share strong interests in technology, energy, and defense, but underlined that India’s domestic industries and long-term development goals must remain protected in any trade framework.
He pointed out that trade ties between the two countries have grown steadily, crossing $190 billion in 2024, but discussions often face friction over tariffs, market access, and data regulations. “We value the relationship, but mutual respect must guide the terms of trade,” Jaishankar said.
The minister’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions on digital trade, intellectual property, and agricultural import issues that have repeatedly surfaced in India–US trade talks. Officials have said India aims to ensure that global partnerships align with its developmental priorities, including manufacturing growth under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Jaishankar added that India’s approach is not about confrontation but about clarity. “Partnerships endure when they are fair,” he said, reinforcing India’s goal to ensure trade agreements benefit both sides equally.
Despite occasional trade disputes, India and the US continue to expand cooperation across strategic sectors such as defense, technology, and clean energy. Both governments have pledged to strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, underscoring shared democratic values and economic interests.
