Iran Rejects European Proposal to Delay UN Sanctions as ‘Unrealistic’

Germany, France, and Britain known as the E3 have presented a proposal to Iran offering a delay in the reinstatement of United Nations sanctions. The offer was aimed at creating space for continued diplomatic engagement over Iran’s nuclear program.

However, Tehran dismissed the plan, calling it “full of unrealistic preconditions.”

Iran’s Response at the UN

Iran’s UN Ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, said the European proposal does not meet the basic requirements for fair negotiations. According to him, the conditions outlined by the E3 would restrict Iran’s rights under international agreements and impose demands beyond what Tehran considers acceptable.

“The plan is not balanced and is based on unrealistic preconditions,” Iravani stated, emphasizing that Iran expects any agreement to respect its sovereignty and obligations under existing frameworks.

The issue of UN sanctions has been central to international discussions on Iran’s nuclear activities. Under previous agreements, including the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), sanctions relief was tied to Iran’s compliance with limits on its nuclear program.

After the United States withdrew from the deal in 2018, tensions increased, and European nations have since sought ways to keep the agreement alive while managing concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities.

E3’s Diplomatic Effort

The latest proposal from Germany, France, and Britain was intended to delay the reimposition of sanctions that could further isolate Iran economically and politically. By seeking a temporary extension, the E3 hoped to create room for broader negotiations that might revive or adapt the JCPOA framework.

Iran’s rejection of the plan highlights the continued difficulty of bridging gaps between Tehran and Western nations. While the E3 have positioned their offer as a step toward compromise, Iran maintains that any negotiations must be free of what it calls “unfair” conditions.

The disagreement underscores the fragile state of diplomatic efforts to address Iran’s nuclear program, as sanctions remain a key point of contention.
