Harvard University issued an urgent shelter-in-place alert on Friday evening after reports of a gunshot near its Cambridge, Massachusetts campus. The alert was sent to students, faculty, and staff across the university network, urging everyone to remain indoors and secure their surroundings while police investigated the scene.

The incident reportedly took place near the Radcliffe Quadrangle, a residential section of the campus that houses many undergraduate students. The Harvard University Police Department (HUPD), along with the Cambridge Police Department, quickly responded to the area after receiving emergency calls.

Law enforcement officers cordoned off sections of the surrounding neighborhood and began a coordinated search operation. As of the latest reports, no injuries or active threats have been confirmed. Authorities stated that the precautionary lockdown was necessary to ensure community safety while verifying the source of the reported gunfire.

Cambridge Police confirmed that multiple agencies are assisting in canvassing the area, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses. Officers remained stationed at key campus points late into the evening as a preventive measure.

In a statement, Harvard officials said the alert was issued “out of an abundance of caution.” They thanked students and staff for following safety protocols and urged everyone to monitor official updates through the university’s emergency communication system.

“The safety of our community remains our highest priority,” the statement read. “We are working closely with local law enforcement to assess the situation and ensure that all members of the Harvard community are safe.”

By late evening, the university advised that there was no ongoing danger, though the investigation remains active. The shelter order was lifted after several hours once the area was cleared by police.

The incident highlights the importance of real-time emergency alerts on university campuses and the growing role of coordination between campus security and city police in responding to potential threats.
