External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar delivered a sharp response when questioned about India’s oil imports from Russia and allegations that the country is profiting from the trade. Speaking at an international forum, he underlined that India’s energy purchases are transparent and driven by national interest.
When asked about criticism of India’s oil trade, Jaishankar remarked, “Nobody forces you to buy it. Europe buys, America buys so, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it.” He highlighted that multiple nations continue to import Russian oil, and India’s position is not an exception but part of global trade realities.
The minister stated that if anyone has a problem with India selling oil or refined products, the solution is simple: “then don’t buy it.” His comments stressed India’s sovereign right to engage in trade based on its energy security needs.
Jaishankar also called out what he described as double standards, pointing out that countries critical of India are themselves deeply involved in commercial dealings. “It’s funny that people working for a pro-business American administration are accusing others of doing business,” he said.
India, one of the largest importers of crude oil in the world, has consistently emphasized that its purchases are guided by the need to secure affordable and reliable energy for its population. Jaishankar reiterated that decisions in this sector are pragmatic and based on economic realities.
The remarks reflect India’s consistent approach of balancing national interest with global expectations. While international discussions continue over energy markets and sanctions, New Delhi has maintained that its oil trade is legitimate and crucial for economic stability.
