Utah Governor had earlier stated that Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk, had plotted the attack using Discord. Reports suggested Robinson discussed weapons, including guns, bullets, and scopes, through the platform.
Discord has now clarified that while Robinson’s account on the app was real, no planning messages related to the assassination were ever sent through their service. The company emphasized that the texts in question were not Discord chats but came from a different source.
According to Discord, the messages that appeared to outline preparations for the attack actually originated from a roommate who recounted a note found elsewhere. These communications were not tied to Discord servers or private chats, contradicting the earlier claims that the app had been used for direct plotting.
Despite confirming that the incriminating conversations were not hosted on its platform, Discord permanently banned Robinson’s account. The company said the decision was part of its wider policy of zero tolerance toward individuals associated with political violence.
In its statement, Discord stressed that it “condemns all political violence” and is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities in their ongoing investigation. The platform added that it is committed to working alongside authorities to ensure misuse of its services is prevented in the future.
The clarification from Discord highlights the challenges technology companies face when their platforms are linked, correctly or incorrectly, to acts of violence. While Discord is frequently used for gaming and community building, it has also come under scrutiny in past cases involving extremist content.
As investigations into Robinson’s actions continue, Discord has reiterated that the platform was not the medium used to plan the attack. The company said it remains focused on maintaining safety and accountability across its services.
