A 33-year-old man was hospitalized Monday evening after being shot during what police believe was a drive-by attack on Chicago’s West Side. The incident adds to the city’s ongoing struggle with street violence that has continued to impact neighborhoods like North Lawndale.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of West 16th Street. The victim was reportedly standing outside when someone drove past and fired several shots in his direction. One bullet struck him in the thigh.

Despite his injury, the man managed to walk to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was treated for the gunshot wound. Hospital officials later confirmed that he was in good condition. Police were notified of the incident after the victim arrived at the emergency department seeking help.

Authorities say no one is currently in custody, and investigators from Area Four Detectives are working to identify the suspect and determine the motive behind the attack. Officers canvassed the area shortly after the shooting, looking for surveillance footage and witnesses who may have seen the vehicle involved.

Residents in the neighborhood expressed frustration but not surprise. Many described the area as one that frequently sees sporadic bursts of gunfire, often leaving locals on edge. “You get used to hearing shots,” said one nearby shop owner. “It’s scary, but people still have to live their lives.”

Police have not said whether the shooting was targeted or random. However, they emphasized the importance of community cooperation in helping solve such cases, which often go unsolved due to a lack of witnesses or reliable leads.

As investigations continue, Chicago police have increased patrols in parts of the West Side where recent shootings have taken place. The department is urging anyone with information about Monday’s incident to contact detectives or leave an anonymous tip with CPD’s tip line.
