Police in Georgia have arrested a man who allegedly planned a shooting at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the world’s busiest travel hubs. Authorities say the attack was prevented thanks to a crucial tip from the man’s family, who alerted police before any harm could occur.

The suspect, 49-year-old Billy Joe Cagle, was taken into custody on October 20, 2025, after arriving at the airport in a pickup truck containing an AR-15-style rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition. According to police, Cagle had made violent threats online and livestreamed his intentions to “shoot up” the terminal.

Cagle’s family contacted the Cartersville Police Department after seeing his alarming social media posts and erratic behavior. Officers quickly notified federal and airport authorities, who tracked the suspect to the Atlanta terminal area. Surveillance footage showed him entering a crowded zone near the TSA security checkpoint before police intervened and detained him without any shots being fired.

Officials say the family’s quick thinking likely prevented a mass-casualty event. “This could have been one of the worst tragedies in our state’s history,” an Atlanta Police spokesperson said. “The family’s decision to speak up made all the difference.”

Cagle faces multiple charges, including terroristic threats, attempted aggravated assault, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He had a prior criminal record that legally barred him from owning firearms. Authorities are now investigating how he obtained the weapon and whether he acted alone.

The incident has reignited debate over airport security and the role of community vigilance in preventing acts of violence. Federal officials praised the cooperation between local police, airport security, and the public.

“This case shows how early intervention and community reporting save lives,” said a TSA representative.

With air travel reaching record levels this year, security experts say the Atlanta case is a stark reminder that preventing violence often begins with one phone call.
