The Andhra Pradesh government has approved plans to set up 10 new medical colleges under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, adding more than 1,500 MBBS seats across the state. The colleges are scheduled to admit their first batch of students from the 2027–28 academic year, with each institution offering at least 150 seats.

Phase-Wise Rollout

The project will be implemented in two phases:

• Phase 1: Adoni, Markapuram, Madanapalle, and Pulivendula.
• Next Phase: Penukonda, Palakollu, Amalapuram, Narsipatnam, Bapatla, and Parvathipuram.

Draft agreements and tender documents for the first phase have already been cleared, while feasibility studies and preparatory work are under way for the remaining six locations.

PPP Model with Government Ownership

Health and Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh clarified that the PPP model will help fast-track construction and bring in private expertise, but the ownership and management of the colleges will remain with the government. This means the new institutions will operate as public medical colleges, ensuring affordability and access.

The new medical colleges are part of Andhra Pradesh’s strategy to expand healthcare access and strengthen medical education. Alongside this project, the cabinet also approved a universal health insurance scheme to support people across the state. Officials said the two initiatives are designed to work together—improving both healthcare infrastructure and the supply of trained professionals.

Opportunities for Students and Communities

With over 1,500 new MBBS seats, aspiring medical students in Andhra Pradesh will have greater opportunities to pursue higher education. The colleges will also help reduce doctor shortages, provide specialized healthcare at the district level, and generate local employment.
