US President Donald Trump has claimed that his administration’s tariff policies helped prevent a possible military conflict between India and Pakistan. Speaking during a meeting at his office, Trump referred to both nations as “nuclear powers” and said his diplomatic approach averted escalation after “seven planes were shot down.”

“India and Pakistan are nuclear powers,” Trump said. “My use of tariffs helped prevent wars. They were ready to go at it after seven planes were shot down.”

The former president did not specify the exact incident or timeline, but appeared to reference the 2019 India-Pakistan aerial confrontation that followed the Pulwama terror attack.

In February 2019, relations between India and Pakistan sharply deteriorated after a suicide bombing in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district killed 40 Indian soldiers. India carried out airstrikes on terror camps in Balakot, Pakistan, leading to a brief air battle that resulted in both countries claiming to have shot down enemy aircraft.

Trump, who was in office at the time, had publicly stated that his administration was in contact with both New Delhi and Islamabad to reduce tensions. In his latest remarks, he appeared to credit his trade and tariff strategy for maintaining stability between the two countries.

The former president has often used past diplomatic episodes to highlight his administration’s foreign policy approach. During his term, Trump emphasized the use of economic measures, such as tariffs and trade restrictions, as tools to influence global partners and adversaries.

While his recent comments have drawn mixed reactions online, Trump’s reference highlights how regional conflicts in South Asia have remained integral to larger global diplomatic narratives.

India-Pakistan Relations Today

India and Pakistan maintain strained diplomatic ties, with no formal talks held since 2019. Both countries continue to engage in limited communication through diplomatic and military channels.
