US President Donald Trump has approved the construction of a 211-mile road connecting Alaska’s highway system to the Ambler Mining District, a region known for its large deposits of copper, zinc, lead, silver, and other critical minerals. The project is expected to boost domestic mineral production and strengthen the US supply chain for key industrial materials.

The Ambler Mining District, located in northwestern Alaska, has been the focus of both economic and environmental discussions for several years due to its mineral wealth and remote location.

Speaking during a meeting at his office, Trump described the project as “an economic gold mine,” emphasizing its potential to create jobs and generate significant revenue.

“It’s an economic gold mine, so to speak,” Trump said. “I signed this years ago, and Biden unsigned it for me. This is something that should have been long operating and making billions of dollars for our country, supplying a lot of energy and minerals and everything else that we’re talking about.”

He added, “Now we’re starting again. At this time, we have plenty of time to get it done, and it’s going to be done properly.”

The Ambler Road is seen as a key infrastructure project that could help the US reduce its dependence on foreign sources of critical minerals used in electronics, renewable energy technologies, and defense systems. Once completed, the road will connect the mining district to Alaska’s Dalton Highway, improving transport access for mining operations.

The project was initially approved during Trump’s presidency but later paused under the Biden administration due to environmental concerns. With the new approval, work on the project is expected to resume, subject to federal and state environmental reviews.

Officials say the road could take several years to complete once construction begins, given Alaska’s challenging terrain and climate conditions.
