Washington DC: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would not send American troops into Ukraine to defend against Russia, drawing a clear line on U.S. involvement in the ongoing war.
Speaking at a campaign event, Trump said, “I will not send our soldiers into that conflict. Europe has to take more responsibility.” His remarks come as fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, with Kyiv pressing for more Western support.
Trump has repeatedly criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine, arguing that Washington is bearing too much of the financial and military burden. His latest statement adds weight to concerns in NATO capitals about America’s future role if Trump returns to the White House.
Ukraine has received billions in military assistance from the U.S. under President Joe Biden, including advanced weapons and ammunition. But Kyiv has also stressed that Western boots on the ground are not part of its request.
European leaders are likely to watch Trump’s comments closely, as they could signal a shift in U.S. foreign policy direction during the election campaign.
