Authorities in Russia’s Belgorod region have ordered children to remain at home after what officials described as a “massive” Ukrainian drone attack. The announcement was made by regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, who said the safety of young people was the government’s first concern.
Alongside the stay-at-home order, local authorities have temporarily closed shopping malls and other public spaces. Officials said these measures were taken to prevent civilian casualties in case of further strikes. Schools in some districts are also expected to move to remote learning until the security situation improves.
The Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, has been hit repeatedly by drones in recent months. In this latest incident, officials reported multiple incoming drones targeting both residential areas and public facilities. While damage assessments are still ongoing, the attacks caused fires, structural damage, and heightened public fear.
Residents reported hearing explosions overnight as air-raid sirens sounded across several towns. Local emergency services worked through the morning to extinguish fires and secure damaged sites. Parents expressed concern over the safety of children, with many welcoming the governor’s decision to keep schools and public spaces closed.
Belgorod has become one of the most vulnerable Russian regions since the war began. Its proximity to the border makes it a frequent target for drone strikes, which disrupt civilian life and stretch local emergency response systems. Authorities have been reinforcing air defenses, but drone activity remains difficult to fully contain.
Governor Gladkov urged calm, stating that emergency services are on high alert and additional safety measures may follow. Security officials are monitoring the situation closely and have advised residents to follow official guidance on shelters and curfews if announced.
The closures and restrictions will remain in place until authorities are confident the immediate threat has eased, leaving Belgorod residents bracing for further disruptions in daily life.
